I suspect the relaxation isn't for the devices per se - but the separation between neighbours in particular in cramped old style back to back or even modern terraced housing like mine.

My living room around c4.3m wide internally is the full width and an offset double patio door means half the width of back wall kind of unavailable.

And to put an ashp in front of  the remaining section of wall would either be too close to that door for my comfort and almost certainly too close to boundary and neighbours patio doors and bedroom windows.

And as new spec noise, probably will deteriorate - dirt on blades, bearings etc ...

Just out of interest how close does a HP need to be to a house?  The nearest spot we could put one (unless we make it a garden feature) would be a good 30 feet from the house.  Which puts it right at the back fence line and very near the neighbours front doors.

  • People stand next to my heat pump and ask how noisy it is when it is running.

I explain to them that it is.

They are virtually silent most of the time even when running.

This article by EDF says within 15m

https://www.edfenergy.com/help-support/faq/are-there-any-restrictions-type-homes-can-have-heat-pump#:~:text=The air source heat pump,1m of your boundary wall.

What is efficient in one install might not be for another.

Single block ashp the heat pump output is hot - and conects like a gch boiler - like 35C min maybe 45C or 55C typical on conventional and maybe 55-65C if on a legionella cycle for hw tank or a hot flow model

And even insulated pipes  - are lossy - so might need to think re inluence on overall efficiency or fit more specialised insulated pipe rather than standard.

Better insulation, possible bigger / higher pressure pump and/or  bigger pipe diameters to counter flow resistance to maintain flow might also factor - restricting model choices and ratings.

Twin units with remote air unit and intrrnal - linked by refrigerant - seen those quoted at 50m on other forums and manufacturer data sheets.

From perspective of heating your body, has to be electric blankets.
If I was in financial crisis, that would be the only form of heating I would pay for. (barring portable heaters during agile cheap rates).
