Warning: Watch out for the T&Cs which mean they can claim a payment without your explicit authorisation, even if you're not on auto-top up
....which is odd for a company that claims no contract required.
After initially giving this company a rave review 3 years ago my opinion has changed.
This product started off as requirement to top up by £10 every 120 days and since my time with them they have introduce a minimum usage policy (which means they can deduct any credit you have to off set any usage shortfall), reduced the required top-up frequency to 60 days and instead of rolling over any credit balance they take it off you.
On top of that they require you to store payment details and if you decide not to top up they have the right to top up your account without your authorisation.
This is in the T&Cs but is very unclear as to what that actually means in practice....and who remembers the T&Cs from 3 years ago plus any updates in the intervening time!
What this means in reality is while you have stored details (which you are obliged to do) they can continue to take money from you without your authorisation (or as the customer service agent said to me 'you agreed to this when you signed up'...3 years ago)
I discovered this by accident, when I decided not top up and let the account lapse and close but got an email saying they had claimed a payment.
This was even more baffling as just 10 days earlier I had received an email confirming that, if I didn't top up, my account would be suspended and close....which was fine by me, that was what I wanted as the product was no longer fit for my purpose.
What even worse is that while there appears to be the facility to remove your payment details, which I did, I then discovered that they had been reactivated without my permission later on the same day.
As a result of, what I consider to be unethical practices, I have closed this account and removed any pre-authorisations from Paypal. At least I hope that's happened...based on my experience so far I can't be sure.
The terms and conditions for this product have gone from simple and straightforward to contradictory and confusing.
When I contacted customer service to find out why they had made a claim (bearing in mind the letter I received) all the agent did was constantly cut and paste the clause in the T&Cs, without explanation as to what this meant in terms of making payments.
I cannot recommend this product, yes the tariff is cheap but if you're an infrequent user like me then the £10 top up ever 60 days, unused credit being pocketed by them and inability to stop them claiming a payment means it's not a good deal for PAYG customers
I have lost a few hundred £s of unused credit with this company so not a good deal at all.Date of experience: 20 November 2024

1p Mobile worked great for me as a light user. Joined in 2018 only needed to top-up every 120 days and I build up a fair balance.
Then came the £2.50 a month charge so I decided to leave, they did want want to keep my balance but after a bit of back and forth they refunded me my money.
It actually worked out very well, I spend the refund on some sims from RWG for £15 that give me free every month 100 mins, 100 SMS & 3/4 gig of data and the £15 remained as credit. In the 2 years I've been with them only used £2 of that credit.
With the now with a min top-up of a tenner every 60 days, for a low user I could never join now, as I could now get more for less money elsewhere.

I had an email from them in April saying the top up frequency was changing from 120 to 90 days, I wasn’t too happy, a 33% increase, but it still seemed fairly competitive.
Now I discover it’s gone to 60 days with no notice (to me) , so a 100% price hike in 7 months, so I’m jumping shop in principle. Plus my £10 top up instantly became £5:61 for reasons I don’t fully understand, or, as I’m off, care about.
Lebara will give 5 gb plus unlimited calls and texts for less than that - and FAR less in the first year, but I’ll never need that, so I’m going to talk home, as recommended on this site.
Not that 1p will lose any sleep, it’s quite clear they don’t want low users like me.
