How much Gas have I actually used in the last 12 months?
Hello everyone,
We (Family of 2 adults, 2 children) live in a 2 bed downstairs flat, when looking at tariffs I am getting very confused with why they think we will be using so much gas.
I have copied and pasted their prediction, and then our readings for the last year.
|| || |09/11/23|Estimate|14388|
|| || |20/11/24|Manual|14885|
So the estimate they gave us back in November 2023 was a gas reading of 14388, I sent in a manual reading on the 2nd of February which read 14487. The latest reading sent in yesterday was for 14885. So am I correct or completely wrong in saying that we have used 497kwh of gas since the 9th November 2023?
They are saying the following when looking at tariffs.
| Daily standing charge | 56.71p | 36.32p |
|---|---|---|
| Unit rate | 24.74p per kWh | 6.06p per kWh |
| Assumed annual usage | 6,127kWh | 8,164kWh |
| Estimated annual cost | £1,722.76 | £627.43 |
Am I getting this totally wrong, I don't understand why they are saying the estimated annual usage is 8164kWh when we have gone from 14388, to 14885 in just less than a year. Wouldn't that mean it was 497kwh we have used, not the predicted 8164??
Thank you!

The meter reads in cubic metres and there are about 11.2 kWh in one cubic meter of gas.
The calculation is on your bills0 -
My meter readings show cubic metres. This has to be converted into kWh.......that may be why your figures don't tally.0

Very (and I do mean very) roughly, 497m³ is about 5600kWh of gas. The calorific value of gas (the number of kWhs in each m³) varies day by day, and your supplier will use an average to convert the meter readings. Predictions are for a colder winter this year, so the estimate of 8164kWh for the coming year isn't likely to be far off. If your usage is actually lower, you can ask for a refund of credit next year (or switch to variable direct debit).subjecttocontract said: Am I getting this totally wrong, I don't understand why they are saying the estimated annual usage is 8164kWh when we have gone from 14388, to 14885 in just less than a year. Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
