Damage to equipment

I run a small touring theatre company. Last week we set up the stage at a local community centre. The performance was due to take place on the Saturday and we were allowed access to the hall the day before so that we could set the stage. We were assured that the only other users of the hall before our performance was a boxing club but they would not need the stage for their activity. When we arrived on the afternoon of the performance I discovered that our projector screen had been moved and was damaged. The following week, approached the man who runs the Boxing club and he admitted he was responsible but as the club has no money he couldn't see how he could replace the damaged equipment. I need to replace it but don't see why I should put my hand in my pocket to replace an item that someone else has damaged! Do I buy a new screen and present the culprit with the bill? or is there a legal approach I can take?
