EDF - how do I get back the £640 I have overpaid on my bill?

I moved home 5 weeks ago - informed EDF & gave them the meter readings. Despite them sending a bill showing I’ve overpaid by £640 odd & numerous emails I still haven’t been refunded. Any advice on getting my money back would be greatly appreciated - TIA

Did you pay by direct debit? If so, contact your bank and use the magic words "direct debit guarantee" and they will recall the money for you.

It should be automatic and within 10 working days of the final bill. Has it been that long?
If yes, you win £30 extra.

Phone them and raise it as a formal Complaint if they have failed to meet the Ofgem target.0 -

Has the OP cancelled the DD, if they were paying that way, then that is how the refund is processed..Here’s the formal bit:
The Guarantee
- The Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
- If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the organisation will notify you (normally 10 working days) in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the organisation to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
- If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
- If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when the organisation asks you to
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify the organisation.

One way to get it all is to switch suppliers.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

£640 isn't a massive amount at this time of year.
What's your usage and your normal monthly debit?
They are unlikely to give you all of the money back as we go into the colder months, but if it's excessive credit you could ask for some back or reduce your direct debit so you start to use up some of it.0 -
Some posters seem to have overlooked that the OP has moved out of the property and is not seeking a partial refund of the credit that EDF holds.EDF are allowed six weeks to generate the final bill, and another 10 working days to refund your credit, so it's still early days.5

Thanks for the advice everyone. To be clear I paid by direct debit - we were abroad for 6 months & that is why I have such a large credit. We then moved house.
Yes I am still with EDF but we have downsized & I’m now paying when I receive a bill - TBH I don’t think EDF have any idea that I’m still a customer.
I just want the £640 refunded & then I’ll change providers.0 -

Who was the supplier at the new house?
If it was not EDF, did you set up a account?
As you are paying EDF at new house, are they your details on the account?Life in the slow lane0 -
Yes I gave them a final reading from the day we moved & told them I was vacating.
EDF are the supplier at the new place but I’m not paying by direct debit & I really don’t think they realise I’m still a customer.0
