eBay and how to complain to their management team

Options
My child opened an account with eBay, I helped her open it as she wanted to sell off some of her old clothes etc.

Both my childs mum and i have eBay accounts, mine since the year eBay started trading in the UK my parter in the early noughties, we have approx 1800 sales between us (which over the years we’ve had the accounts isn’t a lot I know)

No issues with our accounts, we’ve both had to previously jump through hoops with id verification and bank account verification…usually when the UK ups the regulations or something

Both of us have 100% feedback, we both buy and sell on eBay

My child opened her account, she completed the steps required, added her UK bank account details, gave all the correct details when opening the account, date of birth, address etc etc (same address as us) same bank as us (but not account)

Account opened up, she was ready to go, five days later she checks in on the account to check all is well, no problems and that is the only time she logged back in until last week (so about two weeks in total since opening the account)

When she logged in she received a notice that her account had been permanently suspended and no right to appeal.  They as usual quote they cannot give the reasons for the suspension so as not to allow others to curcumvent the system

She was able to get into chat to ask as to why but as is the norm with eBay these days you either get an AI Bot that is utter rubbish, or you may get to speak to a human. At one point they asked what she would be using the account for, she gave them the answers re student so selling off clothes and bits and pieces of theirs.  They asked on volume, she said low, just as and when and they asked on value of items, she stated between pretty much nothing £5, and probably no more than £100….. she mentioned her parents have accounts with eBay (probably not for much longer if eBay act it as a blanket ban) to then get sorry, we can’t help, Goodbye!  literally stating ‘Goodbye!

This has obviously upset my child, 19 with no credit record issues, no cimminal record, nothing, just a hard working student trying to make ends meet like many of us, but she feels victimised and a little concerned as to what eBay have done….she’s a bit worried and is reluctant to open an account with anyone else, she has a Vinted account that has been ok for her for the last couple of years, but eBay was her next step

So given you cannot get anywhere with the faceless idiots at eBay, and no real management team is available…where do we send a letter to at least get it seen by a human of the management team or even just a secretary .

Also, can you send eBay UK a SAR request or are they not governed by UK data rules?

Thankyou!

Was she over 18 when she signed up for the account? Have they ever held an account with eBay while under 18?

Nope, no previous account, they're 19, financial details such as bank account supplied to eBay, along with a PayPal account (you have to be over 18 to have one of them and they have been using it with zero problems for some time now), they were also told they would not be able to open another eBay account ever.

A subsequent scan of their credit report has shown no anomalies. No debt, no loans, nothing untoward anywhere.
  • Is there a specific reason you’re all getting upset over this? It could just be me but…it’s eBay. Who cares.  Are you really going to plough energy into this with SAR etc?  There are plenty of other avenues to sell old clothes. I’d be moving on, personally.

Ebay don't do credit checks anyway. Without going into lots of questions and trying to second guess what may or may not have happened, my best suggestion would be to contact Ebay, politely and succinctly, on Twitter. That usually bypasses the chats and gets you to a department who may help.
As one possible eventuality I wonder if the new account may have been hacked at some point, that would explain the abrupt closure. There's a fair amount of phishing emails that get sent with any new accounts.

The account had only been opened for two weeks,  the account could still be logged in to (still can) so probably rules out at any hacking as a new pw at the very least would be required as eBay would no doubt lock you out.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll give that some thought re a different avenue in.

No problem. I mentioned the hacking as something similar happened to me on Etsy with a new account. I was inundated with spam and never click on anything suspect but within the spam was a genuine Etsy email I ignored. I was suspended for not responding and then had to go through a palaver to get the account up and running again.

It's a long time since I've had a new Ebay account so no idea if there's a similar spam bombardment when you do set one up there.
