Backpacking daughters National insurance.

Options
My daughter has been backpacking abroad for the last 5 years and is currently doing a course in Australia and has been given leave to stay for a possible 2years more depending how long the course is.
Can I pay for her backdated Ni contributions to keep her pension up to date?

  • I don't think you can but this article may help.

  • Your daughter should check her pension forecast https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension
This will give the gaps and the cost to fill them. Currently you need 35 years for full State pension so might be worth thinking about if it's the right time to pay for them.
When I backpacked I never bothered and still will have enough years to get full state pension.
On a personal note 5 years +  is wonderful, I wished I had done more while I was able.

35 years gives a much greater leeway than the previous 44 years.  It may be worth deducting her current age & current no of years NI from say 67 and see what she is left needing.  Or current age say 23 plus 2 years already credited leaves 33 years left to fund in currently over 40 years.

Just for completeness, 35 years is only relevant to those without a NI history prior to April 2016,  essentially people born this century.
Everyone else are under transitional rules where the number of NI years required vary. The only way to know for sure is to check your state pension forecast.

(Examples seen on the pensions board have ranged from 28 to 50 years.)
