Vauxhall Combo Issue

Hello, I am new here so please bear with me if this post is in the wrong place.
2 years ago I bought a Combo from a Peugeot/Citroen main dealer. It was 3yrs old when I bought it with one previous owner and had a little over 30,000 miles on it.
I have always had it serviced and MOT'd when due and had no issues with the vehicle, in fact the vehicle is great.
About a month ago the engine went, something went ping and lost power, no warning lights or anything to signify a fault.
I had it taken to my usual garage and he informed me that something inside the engine block itself had broken, like a belt or chain, NOT the timing belt, and it needs a new engine.
I have spoken to a few people and they have advised me to contact Vauxhall as they think this is a manufacturing fault on the engine which, it seems, is a Peugeot engine.
The vehicle has done just over 51.000 miles and is on a 69 plate.
Can anyone help me with advice on what to do.
As it is still on finance I cant scrap said vehicle.
Please someone help me out here

Which engine?  Peugeot 1.2 petrol engines are a lottery and best avoided,

What model? The bigger new/van shape one with the 1.5 or the older car-with-box one with the 1.3?

It might be hard to prove a manufacturing fault on a 51k / 5 year old van though.

Your best approach is probably to see if Vauxhall can have a look at it for a proper diagnosis. They might identify a cheaper fix or agree it's a manufacturing issue. If not, you're probably best getting a reconditioned engine fitted, they should be pretty common.
  • Its a 69 plate so a 2016 and think it is a 1.7
  • My error, I think its a 1.5 and it is the newer shape small van not the large Transit size one
  • And I am clearly tired as keep putting wrong info in. Sorry It is a 2019 Vauxhall Combo van, the small one.
  • 69 plate was new over winter 2019/20, and is a rebadged Citroen Berlingo/Peugeot Partner, rather than the previous rebadged Fiat Doblo - 2018 was the changeover year, following the 2017 purchase of GM Europe by PSA.

If it's a diesel, it's the 1.5 or 1.6 Ford DLD engine. It's a normal dry cambelt engine.

I suspect the people saying "manufacturing fault" are thinking it's the 1.2 petrol with a wet cambelt.

The 1.5HDi engine does have problems with the link chain between the two cams - earlier engines had a 7mm chain, later upgraded to 8mm around the end of 2019 production. By the sound of the "something broke but not the timing belt", it could be this.

    That's right.
The 1.5 diesel is a PSA product and ended up in Citroens, Peugeots, Vauxhalls, Fords, Suzuki's, Mazda's and probably a few others.

There's a production reference number cast into the engine block (not to be confused with the unique stamped in engine number). It's down near the oil dip stick on the front of the block (front to you with the bonnet open).

    98 126 472 80 is the 7mm chain
    98 305 804 80 is the 8mm chain

There is talk that not it might not be all 7mm chains that are a problem. I have heard it might be only one batch of chains from a certain manufacturer.

Not much help I know but it's needs a new engine and that should come with the 8mm chain.
If you can get Vauxhall to admit the problem and it's been in the dealer network for servicing, you might get a contribution to the repair, but VX aren't well know for doing this.
