In the end, after I cancelled the ‘auto renew’ option, I just kept a close eye on it. Once that date had passed- but before the subscription actually expired- I got repeated offers by email of discounts to renew.
I have finally renewed with a 50% discount and it is for 3 years. The quoted price now for December 2027 renewal is crazy high again, but at that point I might not be needing it any more.
I am just very glad not to have to rebuild the site.1
