Studying in Australia

Heading down to Australia to study. I will need to open a bank account down under but for the first few weeks will rely on using a debit card from my current bank, Santander. Is there a better bank account I could open that will reduce the fees I pay, as some transactions already have been made and the exchange rate is close to advertised but the fee charged seems to be quite high. Thank you.

DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.
