Young Driver Car Insurance

Why when I go to comparison sites does the car insurance cost from £264 to £3600

What makes such a difference with the same details put in.

Which should you go for? Is higher cost a better insurance?

the £264 is likely a provisional driver policy, which is ok until you pass then you are forced to cancel and take a new policy out as a new driver
the more expensive ones are based on the chances of you passing during the policy year so have the extra cost built in

Basically it comes down to how confident are you on passing during this policy year?
If you think you will pass, take a higher price and know that your covered
otherwise take the one that is only for Provisionals and use it to build no claims bonus

Different insurers have different experiences and strategic priorities. If you dont fit their target market some will still quote but just quote the price thats required for them to be interested rather than being just a risk assessment.

How young is young? What car? How many years NCD? £264 would be very cheap for most young drivers.

Price is not a good proxy for quality in insurance, and Motor doesn't vary that much between providers anyway. The top providers do often charge more but so do the bottom of the barrel providers if you dont meet their target. Home insurance cover varies much more but still price isn't a great way to determine quality.

  • Sorry, but there is absolutely no way a 17 year old driver just passed their test is getting insured in their own name for £264.

Who said they'd passed their test?

Its still exceptionally cheap for a provisional driver, unless its a short term top up policy, but as highlighted above, provisional drivers are much cheaper than newly qualified drivers
