Increased air fares

I have paid in full for a trip to New York next May. The cost of the flights have now significantly increased. Can the airline request I pay the difference even though I’ve already paid for a package holiday

Dynamic pricing. It’s normal for the price of airline tickets to go up and down depending on demand. That’s for people is still looking for people who have already bought mat whatever price. So no, If your tickets are definitely bought and paid for, they won’t come back to you for more.
Some tour operators used to stick a clause in about passing on extra cost of fuel - No idea if that’s still there or not, you’ll have to check with your terms and conditions.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Have you actually been asked for extra money or are you just wondering if you might be asked?

No, they cannot. If you received email/text message asking to pay the difference it's a scam.

You definitely purchased a "package holiday".  Is that correct?
Who did you buy the package holiday from?  The airline would not contact you directly unless you had purchased direct from the airline - I note some airlines also offer package holidays.
What is the cost increase you have been asked to meet?
Is it linked to a factor outside the provider's control - for example a change to taxation?
How much - absolute terms - percent terms - is the increase you have been requested to meet?
Normally, package holidays are fixed, but tax changes is one of the few elements that they can consider passing on.

we had a message from our flight provider
stating that the price we paid could
increase and I believe a cost increase range was stated possibly up to £200

Why did the flight provider contact you directly if this was a package holiday?
Was the package holiday purchase from the flight provider?

What is the reason for the possible increase or up to £200?
Is that up to £200 in total for the whole booking?
Or up to £200 per traveller?
Or up to £200 per flight leg?

    How was the message received?

When we booked a message popped up saying price fluctuations could result in us having to pay more for the flights we bought.  I’m not the OP

OK, it was a bit confusing and took the thread away from the OP's issue, which may not be the same as yours as they say they booked a package holiday.

I have flights booked and fully paid for with Singapore Airlines for next year and would not expect them to ask for more money.

It may be helpful if you name your flight provider.
