Refunds can move quickly at times.

We checked into a hotel recently and had two pending transactions on a debit card. The first for our room plus extras, the second (mistakenly) for a room only. We pointed it out to the receptionist, who apologised and said she had somehow managed to charge twice, but she wasn't permitted to make refunds and her boss wouldn't be on until the following afternoon. The following morning these transactions had lost their pending status.

On our way home the next afternoon, we popped into the hotel. The manager said she had received a note about the erroneous transaction but hadn't processed it yet. She checked our room and payment details and said the refund could take 5 working days.

By that evening the transaction had disappeared completely from the app, with no record it had ever occurred.
  • I’ve never had to wait 5-7 days for a refund. In most instances my card has been credited by the end of working day 3. Maybe the 5-7 days is just to manage customer expectations as the absolute maximum it would take.
