Vinted and Revolut Scam

Options
I recently fell victim to a scam where the scammer imitated a Vinted add and advised that my item had sold.
Payment was to be made via Revolut which I happened to have  .
Unfortunately instead of crediting my account they debited £250 via a push notification.
I have now been advised by police that Revolut is not a fully regulated UK bank and is not covered by the new APP Fraud protection.
Please be careful if you are using Revolut for online purchases etc .

Revolut is covered by the new regulations applicable from 7 October, but wasn't a participant in the voluntary equivalent before that.

I don't understand what you mean by 'Unfortunately instead of crediting my account they debited £250 via a push notification'?  APP scams are all about the account holder sending the money.
  • The scammer asked me to accept a push payment to confirm my details.  This was a debit of £250 which they immediately credited back. They claimed this was how they confirmed my bank details were correct.  On the second occasion they said they would debit £250 and then credit £250 + the £50 for the items sold. They only debited the £250 and then disappeared.
I recognise my stupidity but do not understand why Revolut say I'm not covered.

I am surprised this kind of fraud is covered by anyone, as to me this falls under "user error".

By push notification I assume you mean there is a popup in the revolut app itself asking to approve a payment.  This should never be needed if you receiving money, and unless you are actually buying someone from at that moment matching the request, then you shouldnt be approving these requests.

How did the seller get your bank card details to be able to do this?

What I do not get is why are you paying someone to sell your items on Vinted?

If i read it correctly the scammer claimed that in order to confirm the account and receive the payment of £50 for the item they would request a payment of £250 be sent from the seller's account. The seller then approved that payment.
£250 is pretty excessive though for someone to be fooled into authorising the payment.
