Is 256GB extra space worth £200 to you? If so then go for the bigger hard drive. Though there might be an offer on Good Friday that makes the difference less.

It depends on whether you want / need the space or not. I would probably go with the bigger hard drive but you might not.

Do you mean "Black Friday"... Good Friday isn't for another 5-6 months

£200 for an extra 256GB?  are you sure?  Sounds mega expensive to me since that's worth about £40.    Is Apple that much of a rip off?

I’d rather spend about 70-90 for an external ssd for about 1TB

Apple is that expensive and on the Air the SSD is part of the motherboard. That said in the Mac Mini and Studio it's not but people have found it won't recognise any SSD than the one provided.

On the plus side, in most iterations it's actually 2 SSDs rather than 1 so read/write speeds benefit.

256 would be too small for me. If it were a desktop or is going to be used like a desktop then you could add some external Thunderbolt 4 storage but wouldn't want that for a laptop thats going to be carried around.

Personally would also be somewhat aggrieved at paying MBA prices for an M3 processor when all the other Macs have moved onto the M4, even the iPad Pro has a better processor than the MBA at the moment. That should be fixed next spring, in time for Good Friday.

When it comes to Apple's prices you generally get crucified!
