Car Tax discount via PIP

Hello all,
I have just been awarded PIP on the standard rate for both daily living and mobility. When i looked at the gov.uk help, it says although i am not exempt as i dont get the enhanced rate, i could qualify for a 50% reduction for the standard award. My question is, can i get a partial refund for the tax i paid in June this year, or do i make a claim when the tax is due next year? I cant seem to find anything about claiming it back, so i assume its for new claims when the tax is due again. Thankyou for any help.

When you apply you will get the remaining months refunded so if you applied now would be Dec-May, then the new one will run from Nov-Oct.
