Appliance failing consistently after warranty around 1-2 years but hundreds report same fault

Hi All
I bought a Samsung Microwave in Oct 22 and just over 2yrs on the START button has stopped working and one other button.  Looking at the reviews there is a years worth of reviews all saying the same thing after 1-2yrs use. This was an expensive combination microwave at £249. They want me to pay £140 to get it fixed!  But it is only going to last another 1-2 years as the same problem with the PCB board will happen!  Is there any law about appliances not lasting a reasonable amount of time?  I've paid £60 for microwaves and they've lasted nearly 10 years!  Thanks, Sue

    Where did you buy it from?   Direct from Samsung? or from a retailer (Currys, Argos etc).   Your consumer rights lie with the company you bought from, not with Samsung.

    Yes, but only in the sense that the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires that goods are 'of satisfactory quality', defined only as far as:

    The quality of goods includes their state and condition; and the following aspects (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

    (a) fitness for all the purposes for which goods of that kind are usually supplied;

    (b) appearance and finish;

    (c) freedom from minor defects;

    (d) safety;

    (e) durability.

    If you can prove, usually by an independent expert report, that this is due to a manufacturing defect then you have a claim against the firm your bought this from (not Samsung unless you bought direct). If the problem is a widespread and well documented as you suggest a reputable retailer might waive the need for a report. If not you would need to pay for the report then, assuming it finds in your favour, add the cost to your claim.

    The retailer can then either have the product repaired or refund you the purchase price LESS a  proportionate reduction for however long it has worked. Six years is the generally accepted lifespan of most domestic appliances so if you have had it two years they could knock a third off.

    It needs to last a "reasonable" amount of time, up to 6 years.

    How expensive was the microwave? If it was £60, 2 years ain't half bad. If it was £600, definitely not, although I'd question why you would ever buy a microwave that expensive.
