    Thinking even more laterally. What would be the point in having a roof at all, if you have to cover everything with weatherproof covers anyway?

    There are plenty of adverts for glass canopies which supposedly mean you can sit outside in all weathers.  They seem to assume there will never be any wind too.  A covered outside area can be useful but is never going to protect fully against wind and rain.  That's why I would cover furniture in that situation.
