Must admit I was quite keen  on rclone intil my security checker through it out as potentially malicious. The reason being it is often used by hackers as on of the tools in a ransomware attack...but not in itself malicious if downloaded from rclone.org.
If it's used as a tool by hackers, it must be very good :-/

Seriously... rclone has been around for ages, is fully open source, and has been subjected to various analyses re its implementation and security. The main dev (indeed a bloke from Surrey) has been quick to react if a weakness has been identified. But as ever, 100% security is an illusion.
  • Can't disagree TSMG.

Synantec also say the legit rclone is OK. It is just, like several other utilities ( amongst them Anydesk, Power shell etc), it is used as a tool by hackers.

I just wonder if a symbol link is safer....maybe...maybe not!

Beware thinking that MS Backup  based on One Drive provides a full backup service.  The problem is that if you mistakenly modify or delete a file on your home Documents that change is quickly reflected in the Cloud.  I dont know whether other cloud based backup products provide secure storage for known good files.

tbh unless I have missed something I find it difficult to see what use it is to a single home user.  However experience tells me that unless you have your standard main folders structured in the way that Backup expects them to be things can get very confused and it is a nightmare to sort them out.

It took quite a lot of thought and work to get rid of it and put things right after installing onecloud/backup.  Despite my efforts it is still repeatedly asking me to start up Backup - no way!

It went horribly wrong, classic "deadly embrace" with GDrive & OneDrive trying to back up each other via my hard drive, bringing laptop and house internet to grinding halt.
That's one reason why I'm weary of stuff that does things "automagically" in the background. I'd rather invest a little more time (and yes, sometimes lose some convenience as well) by automating things my way... but have them under my control.
The problem here was not the automatic but the manual attempt to move things.

If that's the case then I must've misunderstood flaneurs_lobster post.

     - The problem is that if you mistakenly modify or delete a file on your home Documents that change is quickly reflected in the Cloud -

OneDrive supports file versioning so you can always roll back one or more versions if you've made a mistake and there's a quite deep Recycle Bin from which to recover deleted files.

things can get very confused and it is a nightmare to sort them out. -

Not my experience, using the OneDrive client to add or exclude folders from the synchronisation set was quite straightforward. Then had the option of whether to keep the full files on the C:\ drive for access when offline or free-up space and have them downloaded on-demand when online.
  • Thanks Linton.
Yes I can see that it might be problematic if an erroneous file is almost instantly backed up. It does seem more like  a one way sync as it does not include a scheduler. It does seem more like  a file sharing app between devices!

However I am hoping task scheduler can do the true backup. Researching  that at the moment....

Very likely, since even I can't quite remember the detail of my very clever hack that I thought was going to back up everything of importance to both clouds, but think it was a move of "system" folders to the virtual cloud folders of the services.

Ended up with dozens of copies of pretty much everything spread all over the place.
