At risk!!?

Options
Just found out Monday that my job is at risk, I work for a small charity and understand the difficulties with money. BUT… there are three jobs at risk all of which are females, the email regarding why was to reduce costs but be able to continue with the work we do but the jobs at risk are 2x delivery of the work and one of bringing in the money to the charity. They have also just had new hires in admin type jobs who are not at risk and are males.
forgive me if I’m wrong but surely this isn’t right? Do I have a leg to stand on if I put in some kind of grievance?

Only you will know this - does the charity have a history of appearing to prefer male workers? Have females been made to leave previously and males stayed? Its quite hard to prove gender bias.
Also, are you able to provide evidence that your job is more important to the charity than the admin jobs? Remember if they make you redundant they can't just replace you so your job role will no longer exist. Rather than a grievance I would be making a case for the importance of my role

As they are different jobs, they have taken on admin roles and are losing delivery roles. Why would you feel a grievance is the way to go?
  • Because the reason they said they are making the cuts is the save money but with the ability to continue to deliver the work but they’re cutting the delivery jobs which would make that near impossible

I think you need to compare job descriptions of the different roles.   If they are significantly different then there would be no gender discrimination.  If they are significantly the same then there could be gender discrimination.

  • As a minimum if the charity had these proposed changes in the pipeline (which is a safe assumption they did) they really shouldn’t have been recruiting into other potentially suitable roles. Harder in a large organisation but if it is a small one they should have considered blocking vacancies before entering consultation.
Not forgetting that people can and
should be trained to do alternative roles. Redundancy is often used as an easy exercise to excuse a little complexity.
