Garden Wall

We have a garden wall - about 100 yards in length, 4 foot high - breeze block constructed that has seen far better days
The mortar is falling out everywhere
The whole wall really needs taking down and rebuilding but we have been quoted about £6000 for the work
What are our options ?
Can we repoint a large wall ?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

6k sounds cheap for 300ft of wall 4ft high

  • I would buy a cement mixer and repoint it over several sessions using lime mortar. I'd start next May because lime mortar needs to avoid the frost.

This was taken about ten years ago - it shows the construction - but the mortar has become far worse over the years

For the quantities of mortar used in a session of repointing, a paddle mixer would be all that is really needed. Or just a whisk on the end of a pistol drill. Even if the OP were to use cement instead of lime, it would be best to wait until spring. Cement mortars are affected by frosts too.

I can understand why they want £6k for the job if you want it rebuilt in the same style. If the wall is generally sound and p!umb, you could get away with a repoint, but it's only cheap if you DIY, especially if both sides need doing.
Cutting out the joints on the screen blocks and coping stones would cause the most issues. There's a good chance the joints would go and you'd end up relaying them.

Have you measured the length of the wall correctly as a 300 ft long wall is getting into manor house territory.

It could be it's it goes around the property, rather than in one length.
