Travel insurance for trip commencing over a year away

I want to get our travel insurance in place, but our trip does not commence until December 2025. Most companies won't quote this far in advance for single trip policies and if I get an annual policy it will run out before the trip starts. I know I could just renew the annual policy but then I'll be paying twice. Or I could set the start date to commence in the future but then we wouldn't be covered in the interim.

I'm not sure of the best thing to do in this instance.

Any thoughts? Thank you.

You wouldn’t be paying twice but if you set the policy start date as 1/12/25
if anything happens before then that cause you to cancel you wouldn’t be covered. Same as if you book an annual policy it won’t be covered if it’s not in the policy year
Is this something that you are aware of?

What have you paid so far? The full price of the holiday or a modest deposit? What would your losses be if you cancelled in Jan 25?

It's then a question of if you want to run the risk until then when you can then buy a single trip or commit for back to back annual policies.

If you set the annual policy start date yo be 1.12.25 firstly, you wouldn't be able to do that until late 2025, most insurers cap it at 3 months in advance or less and secondly were they to break their leg on 30.11.25 they wouldn't be able to claim as it happened before their insurance was in effect.
  • Thank you all. I think I’ll just wait until Jan 2025 and sort it then as I’ve ‘only’ paid a £750 deposit which I could just about live with in a worst case scenario.

It just threw me a bit as we have often booked our holidays over a year in advance and I don’t remember ever having this dilemma before.
