Micro SD card storage disaster

Hello, In trying to help my wife with her phone storage I seem to have created a huge problem. So, I put the micro SD card in the phone and formatted it as internal storage as seemed to be advised in an instruction I read. Now every app , photo and image on the phone seems to be going straight to the SD card storage. For example a whats app image will not appear with the message and the photos are all in some very difficult to find folder and no longer in any date order other than the date the SD card was introduced. Much to my concern the only online articles I have read seem to be suggesting there is no way out of this mess up.
I'm hoping someone on here might know different?

What device, OS?
You could try to re-format the card as "portable storage". If that fails put it into a PC/laptop and format as exFAT or FAT32 and don't reformat once back in the phone.

Thank you, but to re-format will lose everything on the card apparently. Its an Android 9 OS on a Moto E6S0

As a follow up, can anyone advise where the images can be found. Basically, if she gets a message with a picture, the picture element is totally blurred out and only the text is readable.0

I believe there is an option with the slider switch to say where photos are stored EG internal storage on the phone or the SD card.
have a look for this or Google it0 -
Please don't take this the wrong way, but a serious question is what are you doing using an Android 9 phone on the internet. That has been unsupported for years and full of known vulnerabilities.
You could try this, think it should still be the same for a version that far back. Start step 1 with whatsapp if that is the one that is causing you issues.- Move all apps installed on the SD card to Internal Storage (if any). You can do that in Settings / Storage / SD card / Apps. You have to move each app individually.
- Migrate your data from the SD card to Internal Storage (only if you migrated your data to the SD card before). In Settings / Storage / Internal Storage, open the 3-dot-menu and select Migrate data.
- Now your SD card should be empty. If you want to remove it permanently you should format it as portable storage before ejecting it.
