Receipt details not matching payment method

Wondering whether anyone else has experienced something similar...
My wife and I purchased some knives from John Lewis, which we later decided to return. Fortunately, we had kept the receipt; however, when we returned the knives, the cashier asked for the card with same last 4 digits as those on the receipt, digits which don't match any of our card details. Therefore, they would only give a refund via gift card. Afterwards, my wife found and showed me the original transaction on her online bank account - so, why might the reciept show different details?

Which bank? Some banks have different card details for the actual card than the ones in app (such as Chase)0

I've had this before, I've just said I paid with my phone and they refunded to my phone. Did they need the physical card to complete the refund? I know in my Google wallet it shows the actual 4 digits of my card so I could always show this if there are any issues.0
