Can you change the flap on the outside to one that lifts up outwards rather than pushes inwards?

  • Could you not fit a brush draught excluder on the inside
  • Thanks everyone.  Yes, we thought of the 'making a frame' option but as others have suggested are a bit worried the postmen may not like it as they have to get over two "hurdles" and a gap in the middle to get letters through.  Also it may not look very nice.  Don't like the box idea as the door is quite ornate and I think the box will ruin it.

The fittings are nice old Victorian metal style ones on outside so would prefer not to have to change these.

Maybe we can mock up a frame and test it for "awkwardness" from outside to see how tricky it might be to get post through.  Don't want mangled post or a stressed out postie!!

Yes, it's surprising that the outer flap protrudes so far inside. The door is quite thick though, maybe 2 inches.

Thx for the helpful replies, just thought worth searching for alternative options.  May just have to live with the draught or  create a thick fabric flap that at least keeps some of the draught out.

I had an Edwardian door and letterbox that I loved.

My eventual soloution was to use thin foam draught excluder under the outside and not visible and wind couldn't get through the tiny space surrounding it and so I could remove to polish - but inside I used an indoor flap and in winter pushed a scarf/paper towels whatever worked into the space behind the indoor flap which kept the indoor smart.

This kept the draught out, didn't show and letters were easily pushed through.
OK so whatever I'd stuffed it with came through too but 90% of the time it was draught free and very easy, seconds to restore

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
