How to straighten tap

There looks to be a lot of scope for the wrong thing moving after use of a big wrench and the dreaded drip of water appearing. Not 100% sure, but it looks like someone may have done a bodge using a(n oversize?) plastic nut underneath the brass backnut - possibly because the hole in the basin is larger (or possibly irregular) and the brass backnut alone wouldn't tighten without making the tap itself twist out of position. There are various proprietary and non-proprietary 'washer' type solutions, but I think they have just used a plastic nut instead....I'd see that as a possible warning that undoing the brass backnut may lead to a wasted afternoon and the use of various colourful language as you try to refit the tap somewhere approaching straight and level.1
