I bought Office 2016 some years ago via work HUP.

I now have a new laptop, which has Office 365 trial installed on it. I have also managed to do something to log in with that 2016 account username / password.

However, when I now try to open (e.g.) a Word document from an email (I haven't yet transferred my contents from my old laptop), it opens another dialog box on front asking me to choose which O365 option (subscription / trial) I want to use, despite recognising that HUP username first.

It's almost as if it's opening over the top of the document - I can see the document behind it, but can't close the dialog box without either logging in with a different email / a product key (don't have that) and perhaps other options.

Do I just uninstall O365 as an App on the machine? Or do something else? I've slightly lost track now ... !!

Thanks for any thoughts (I'm not keen on going down the open software route).

NB. This page (about halfway down in a grey box on the right side) might suggest that it is now only available for Macs, not PCs. Or I might have misunderstood ...
Install or reinstall Office or Microsoft 365 through Microsoft Workplace Discount Program - Microsoft Support

    HUP is now workplace discount.

If your workplace still participates then you'd get a 30% discount on a 365 subscription.

Alternatively, you could reinstall 2016 which you bought a discounted licence for (if it will run on your hardware)
  • As well as the above  are you aware that 365 use is linked to your Microsoft account? So I suspect that you may need to reinstall or at least link 365 to your account.

Intuitively if you have the trial version on your PC you may have to just update it ( link on 365 app) but you then need to link to your account till it shows on your account as a 365 subscription.

This, on my post, certainly is not definitive -as I have found in the last week there is conflicting  information supplied by Microsoft, however...

The web page below gives install info. Bear in mind it seems that 365 is not , with the free or Basic level of subs, including the Office suite apps- but the online 365 version is free and also linked to your Msoft account for everyone. So you may have to pay for it but at a discount as per PHK's post

    e.g. "

Install Microsoft 365 for the first time

Some Office 2019, Office 2016, and Office 2013 products come with a product key. If yours did, before installing Microsoft 365 for the first time, sign in with an existing or new Microsoft account and enter your product key at office.com/setup. Redeeming your key is what links your account with Microsoft 365 so you only have to do this once. Already did this? Select the tab below for the version you're trying to install."

    Below that is reinstall info.

You may find the HUP is 1 pc only and wont reinstall on a new pc. You can delete the 365 trial from the pc which will stop it 'prioritising' in use. I've used Electronic First to buy the family's office keys with no problems. I'm not ready to pay annually for something I don't use that much. Libre Office is a free option also

You could of course just go to www.office.com and use the free online version if that does what you need.

    Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I bit the bullet and used Electronic First as suggested by @flashg67 - it all worked fine (although the telephone activation of the licence was a little disconcerting). I now have Office Professional (Plus??) 2021 to keep me going for the next few years on this device.
