How long to get a response re. 25% discount for Council Tax?

Hi all

I applied for a single person discount (25%) re. Council Tax. It's been about 10 days since and I've not received a reply.

Do I need to wait a bit longer or should they have responded by now?

Most public sector organisations are understaffed so I wouldn't chase them yet.  Give them to the start of next week.  Any reduction should be backdated to the date of application.

And the first payment is due by 5.12.24 but the figure quoted is presuming that I'm paying the full council tax without any discounts.

I know I've a couple of weeks until that date, but as you say I'll give them a few more days then I'll ring them for any progress.

They'll need 2 or 3 weeks.

If you want to adjust the DD phone the general finance department, explain to them and and they should be able to cancel down that payment and set up a new DD or move to manual payments until sorted.

I don't know if this time frame is set in law, but every council website I've looked at (via Google) which specifies a time for how long they will take to make a decision on a council tax discount (often with reference to a single person discount) has the same answer - 28 days.
