UPS customs charge - delivered anyway?

hello,

I ordered something from Denmark to England. I received an email from UPS saying I’d need to pay a customs charge of £50 to receive it, either online in advance or at the point of delivery. I contacted the company and said I couldn’t afford it. They said no worries, when it comes ask UPS to return to sender and that will be free for me.

i was ready to do that but the parcel arrived when I was out and they delivered without me paying the customs fee? 

So now I’m not sure what to do. If I keep it, I’m worried I’ll be chased to pay the fee in a few weeks when it’s too late to return the parcel. If I want to return it, I’ll now have to pay the £10 return fee as there’s no return to sender option as it’s already been delivered.

Do you think I’ve gotten away with the fee?

I doubt it. The invoice normally arrives some time later.  It's a frequent complaint on here when people accept a parcel, get an invoice shortly afterwards and complain that they didn't have a chance to refuse the delivery.

You'll probably now have to pay the fee and then claim it back from HMRC when you return it.

Once an item has gone through customs the courier pays the charge on your behalf, to get the item out of customs. 

By the time the courier contacts you they have already paid it.

There is a way to return the parcel and reclaim the customs charges.
