Duvet protectors - to buy or not to buy

Hi,
I use pillow protectors (under pillowcase) on my pillows and a mattress protector, but do people use duvet protectors? I will be replacing my ancient duvet hopefully soon so wondering if I should get a duvet protector. In theory it should prolong the lifespan of the duvet, but the price of the protector is almost the same as price of new duvet... Not sure if it's worth it.
Just to add, I do not use feather duvet. The protector would be just to keep the duvet clean. I would still use duvet cover over the protector.
So, what is the opinion on duvet protectors? Are they useful or waste of money?

Where will it end? Will you wash the protector more often than the duvet itself? Will it mean you can wash the actual duvet less?

I know people who have pillows, pillow protectors, plain white pillow cases (to protect the protectors), then the outer pillow case!

It depends on the duvet and why you want to protect it.
I use woo! duvets which are more expensive. I also have some allergies so using the wool duvet without the protector affected my breathing. I had the protector from Dunelm and it wasn't expensive but I probably wouldn't bother getting one just for an ordinary duvet.

Unless you were washing your duvet a lot and the protector minimised that - I washed my cheaper ones (without protectors)  twice a year when I swapped from summer to winter duvets and they did start to go a bit lumpy.

In theory duvet protectors can be useful in case of incontinence/leakages.
However they are stiffer/crinklier than a normal duvet cover, so not as comfortable and they make a noise when you move.

Not something I’ve noticed with mine.  You may be thinking of the waterproof ones. Not all of them are waterproof.

Presumably these are waterproof ones. You can also get protectors that aren’t waterproof and are designed to absorb sweat/ minor staining rather than leaks.

Really depends on how many are in the bed and how hot and sweaty you get.

I've never used a duvet protector but have a sheet with the duvet above and for one, non sweaty individual the duvet is still pristine.

Ditto.  I can run hot, so just the sheet is usually enough for me for most of the summer.  We use a summer weight duvet (Baavet) all year round, so using a cotton top sheet helps to keep it clean.

OP, if your current duvet is ancient, it would suggest you don't really need anything to protect the new one to make it last? We have a mattress protector, the other half insists, but I'd draw the line at a duvet protector given we use duvet covers already.
