We went in November - be warned - parts of the city can flood during the acqua alta (high tide). Seek out restaurants and cafes in the side streets - fabulous food and loads cheaper than in the main tourist areas.

On the upside, fewer people and reduced exposure to the unique olfactory environment that only Venice can offer (especially in the height of Summer). 😂

We go mid March to celebrate our anniversary. We splash out a bit and stay at the Hotel Rialto, canal view room. We spend our days wandering around and getting lost! It’s good fun! Lovely small backstreet restaurants for dinner then back to our room to lean on the window sill, with a scotch, watching the tourists below and the canal traffic, magic!
Early morning canal side is different, it’s delivery time, butchers, bakers, wine merchants and DHL all with noisy sack trucks. No need for an alarm!

Quieter time is in February, the week after Carnival. Flight inc. family run hotel Tintoretto in Cannaregio very reasonable, with excellent restaurant. We treated ourselves to the ferry from airport, seeing Venice appear across the lagoon at sunset just sublime start to a special holiday. Take good walking shoes, suncream & warm waterproof. Pre book vaporetto ticket, includes the glass & lace islands. Stop frequently for coffee & aperol spritz.  Look for the bookshop with moored Gondola for cheats photos. Wander and enjoy.
