I came home today to find a letter from Santander saying they were closing an account I have that was in arrears for £9.95 because of account fee's. I completely forgot about this account and this is the first I've heard about it. Obviously I immediately put money into the account to clear the £9.95 but now I'm worried about the impact of the default. The letter was dated 29/10/2024 and it's only arrived today, I'm going to call them first thing in the morning but I literally had no idea about this and can't believe such a stupid error is going to completely mess my credit report up!
My credit report it currently perfect, I check it every month and Santander have not registered a missed payment in any of the previous 2 months as it looks like 3-months of account fees. Had they registered a missed payment when it occurred I would've known straight away and sorted it immediately. Is there anything I can do or is it just a case of I've just screwed myself over completely here.

Unless they've mentioned the word Default then they shouldn't be applying one.
It should just look like account closed, zero balance.

All for £9.95 in account fee's not even like its an overdraft where I've spent money!0 -
A small blip that you have rectified won't mess up your credit history. If you apply for credit in a year's time it likely won't be noticed.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.
