Turn it off if it's bothering you at night.

You might contact the owner and see if they'll accept a cancellation and refund for the second and third nights, and book elsewhere.

Or turn the unit off, close the window and deal with the heat as a lesser problem than the security risk.
  • There is a bolt on the window to stop it being opened far enough for someone to climb in.  I hate to say this but portable AC is noisy, that's the nature of the beast

    Given OP said
We recently got to our 3 day stay Sydney Airbnb and it has a portable Aircon unit in a small room that is a really really noisy.

I guessing that they have already stayed the full 3 days.

Unless they raised the issue at the time, then I doubt that they will get anything back.

It would also depend on the description of the property and the provision of any air con

If you're referring to that brass bolt on the side, it's useless.  Anyone could just reach in and undo it.  It would have made much more sense to attach it at the top of the moving pane where it would be much harder to get to from outside.  Why the fitter didn't thinknof that is anyone's guess.

My guess is because that bolt was installed years, decades perhaps, before that portable A/C hose appeared?

The moving pane is called a sash.
There is a fitch fastener to lock the sash when closed, as is usual for sash windows. The bolt is not to lock the sash but to keep it open. I suspect there are several holes in the frame drilled to allow that bolt to hold the sash open to various degrees. Bottom rail is much more accessible than the top rail when the sash is open.

Useful in Sydney's heat in the years before affordable A/C.

Aircon would work better if the gap in the open window was filled, might allow it to be turned down a bit.

I have family in Sydney and it's low 20s at the moment so not exactly hot requiring air-conditioning!

Bit late now but just turn the aircon off and close the window and pull the bolt across.

Cuddle some frozen peas if necessary. Much quieter and better for the environment!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
