how to stop someone using your wired internet connection

Without going into too much detail i need a way to stop someone using my wired internet connection. By this i mean bringing there own laptop in the house and pluging my wire into her laptop and thus accesing the internet through my ip address.

At the moment (this is very untechie i am affraid) i have a wire going from the bt box on the wall into my bt voyager 205 adsl router and then an ethernet cable from that into the back of my pc tower. I use bt broadband (top package).

Now i dont really want wireless as my brother has wireless virgin (in the same house) and i dont know if that will interfere with mine and i perfer good old wires. Is there a way this can be done. I password protect my pc tower however if she just uses the lead then obviously it will bypass my pc.

help/suggestions gladly recived

  • hide the lead.

you could set the router to only allocate an ipaddress to your pc, instead of a range

albertross the lead thing was my first thought but it will mean pulling everything out of my fitted pc desk so i was hoping that would be a last resort

It is actually very simple. Tell the person you do not want them to use your connection.

They'll turn around and tell you you're being unreasonable as 'you've paid for the connection already so what's the big deal'. Tell them you've paid for it for YOUR use and not theirs. And if they want to use it they can pay you rental.

Alternatively tell them that you don't mind if they think you're being unreasonable as you feel they are taking advantage of your genorosity and it stops now.

Alternatively - disconnect when they arrive so that they can't connect to your ISP even if they wire up to the computer.

Alternatively - remove the wire and when they ask where it is tell them you're sick of their taking advantage. Then live with the consequences.

Why did you let this happen in the first place?

asserting yourself is probably the easiest option - less fiddling needed. AND you'll find some inner strength that you wouldn't find if you tried to be devious and not confront the situation head on.
  • Two options:

    1. Tell her not to do it.
    2. Don't let her in the house !!?? laughing-smiley-014.gif

Seriously though, albertross gives good advice re the IP address.
  • Don't know the screens on that router, but the router will probably allocate an ip address by using dhcp. You should be able to tell it your mac address (found using ipconfig /all), and allocate a reserved ip address locked to that mac address, and then make sure the dhcp range is limited to one ip address (ie yours). This might not work, but worth a try.

Alternatively, you could turn dhcp off all together on the router, and manually set an ip address on your pc.

  • Its not my house its my mothers so she allows her in and allows her to use my brothers. My mother has asked me on behalf of my sister to use my wire and i said no. However i want a definate way to stop her using it. Its never happened before on my wire however she uses my pc under my supervision but due to a 'problem' i dont want her using it full stop. My brother has now cut his wire (but he is wireless anyway that was alreay installed as a back up) so she cant use his but i cant do that. I can disconnect it from the bt box however everyone knows where the box is and they can simply replace the connection iyswim.

Maybe removing the ethernet cable is the best way. It will mean me buying a smaller one of those though as mine at the momment is about 10metres :o

Thanks for all your help anyways.

short term: when not in use, log into the router and remove the password, put it back with you want to use it

long term: is your router allows it, then reserve the first ip address to your PC by using the PC name and MAC address and then use the routers firewall option to block access by all other ip address the router supports

Also if you and your brother use the same BT router for broadband then you'll also need to do the same for the brothers PC in allocating a ip address

password protect your PC so she at least can't use that.
