How should I respond to this return request?

Options
Hi all,
Never has this before!!

Gaming CPU sold (brand new and sealed) to a buyer on 7 Jun 2023 (yes, over a year ago!)

Received a message today from the buyer stating the CPU is no longer working and he wants to return it for a refund!

The CPU does come with an Intel 5 year warranty I believe.

Should I just refer him on to Intel?

I can no longer see any item details because it is so old, or how he paid - whether it was a credit card or PayPal etc - although has it exceeded any period for any chargebacks etc?

Thank you

As a business you are responsible for any guarantee.

Sorry - forgot to mention - I'm not a business. I'm just a private seller (and registered as a private seller) on eBay.

If this was a local store I'm guessing they would refer me to the manufacturer and not refund me?!

Either way, this was sold as me being a private seller - I do not sell anywhere as a business. Just sell personal items I do not want/need.

No chance I'd take it back.
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
  • How do I respond - refer him on to Intel as I am a private seller and do not provide any guarantee/warranty?

I believe a chargeback can be filed up to 120 days after purchase, whereas this is way beyond that anyways.....

How about something along the lines of:

    Hi,
    Many thanks for your message.
I am sorry you are having trouble with your item, although as this is an item purchased almost 1.5 years ago it falls outside of the eBay returns window. I am a not a business so cannot offer guarantee's or warranties with items as this was a personal/private sale. Hopefully Intel may be able to help you further.
    Kind regards

To be honest I cant really respond with anything he is going to like regardless, even if I wanted to......

Assuming you made no offer of a warranty on the original sale then you just use the decline option as you are under no obligation at all to accept a return at this point.

Op says nothing about a guarantee, only a manufacturers warranty. If there is a warranty supplied by the manufacturer, and it is likely that the warranty didn’t pass to the new buyer anyway, then buyer needs to take it up with the manufacturer.

Thats correct. I cant see the item details any more as it's no longer available on eBay, but I do recall it having a 5 year manufacturer warranty (which could be checked by entering the serial number online) as Intel do this with many of their gaming CPUs by default.
As a private seller I did not offer any personal guarantee or warranty of course.
I was just concerned in case he feels a chargeback etc, but I see that has to be done within 120 days anyways.....

No option to decline - buyer just sent me a message via the eBay messaging system as he can't open a case for a sale from 17 months ago!

At this point I'm wondering whether I should even respond?
