When someone leaves their course in the first term of the first year i.e. November. What happens to the student loan. Will they be liable for the whole year (tuition fees and maint grant) and what do they have to pay back if any immediately?

You have to look at the regulations for the university in question... generally only part of the first year's tuition fee is due, and that amount will simply be added to the student loan.

When I left my course part way through the term I had to repay immediately part of the Maitenance loan and the full term tuition was added to my loan balance.1
