EDF Shady Behaviour Help?

Hi,

I have recently logged onto my edf account and there was a gas bill from 03/10 to 03/11 for 591.4400 kWh @ £42.43.
When I checked my meter readings the reading on the 03/10 was 8 and on 3/11 was 57.

I worked out I used 48m^3 of gas which works out as 540 kWh, when I rang and told them they said their system was right, then he went away, came back and said it was still right. I went through the industry calculation with him and then he said that he was opening and closing a complaint, refunding £22 which was what my account was in debit by and sending me a statement through the post explaining my account.

He would not give me any other details, but I feel this is underhand behaviour and doesn't explain anything. I feel like I want to leave now as I do not trust them but I will have to pay exit fees to do so.

  • 57 minus 8 = 49 not 48, but yes, agreed 591.4 sounds a little high.

Does the bill show the meter readings EDF are using?

What calorific value are you assuming? Does EDF agree?

Looking at my bill, the smart meter gas readings are recorded to 4 decimal places which could make a considerable difference to your calculations if you have rounded the figures you are using.

  • Sorry, yes I meant 49. Yes, the bill shows start reading of 8 and end reading of 57. I used the calorific value on the previous bill (49 × 1.02264 × 39.5† ÷ 3.6 = 549.81

Sounds like rep has just decided that it is not worth arguing over £22 & given you a gesture of good will to go away.🤷‍♀️ Hence the opening & closing of the complaint.

  • I understand that but how are they calculating it wrong. If I had not of noticed, they would have charged me the wrong amount.

Would it not be better to see whether the statement explains everything to your satisfaction?
It seems a bit premature to accuse them of shady and underhand behaviour before you've had a chance to read what they have to say.

Sounds just like a bog standard seasonal estimate that would have resolved itself the next time meter readings were formally submitted.
