Moving house - when to tell energy supplier

Hi all, some advice please.
I'm hoping to move house shortly and I don't know when to tell my energy supplier. No sale is certain until you've actually exchanged contracts so if I tell them before that and the purchase falls through what do I do? I'm with So Energy. The seller of the house I'm hoping to buy is with Octopus energy.
Do I tell So Energy and ask if they'll supply my new address? If they need notice, how do I get round the fact the purchase might fall through? Is it better (possible) just to tell Octopus I expect to move into the address they supply and ask them to take me on as a new customer, then confirm it once we've exchanged contracts?
Thank you.

Check your Ts&Cs, but most suppliers only want a day or two's notice of quitting, so it's not a problem. Send them the closing readings on the day of completion.Register with Octopus on the day of completion (Standard Variable Tariff) give opening readings and set up a Direct Debit. You can then move to the supplier of your choice, but you'll have to pay Octopus for short time you'll have been with them. Some suppliers will do this for you, perhaps allowing you effectively to transfer your tariff to the new property.2

I've just moved property. I emailed the supplier pretty much on the day that I became responsible for the council tax (which was actually about 2 weeks before I physically moved in). the existing was actually with octopus although I've switched to british gas1

We used Octopus’s move home service when we moved last year, but had we not been doing so I would just have rung them on the day of moving out with the final readings I think - it wouldn’t occur to me to give them more notice.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
