She would get charged an hours labour minimum for diagnostics regardless if it is not a warranty issue. Which she has authorised by having them do the diagnostics.

So if they have just charged for that and the price of the bulbs then I don't see the issue. If she had refused the bulbs being changed she would still have to pay for the diagnostics.

So unless she believes she could have gone elsewhere to buy the bulbs and fitted them herself (or had them fitted by whoever supplied them) for less than they charged for the bulbs only, then there isn't much to complain about.
Okay fair enough but maybe they should have explained to her we will take it in and do a diagnostics which will be charged at X amount.

She was just basically told it wasn't a straight forward bulbs gone and have them changed issue, they told her that that there was some other issue and car needed to be booked in and it was under warranty.

As far as she was aware was being done under warranty, she thought any problems would be sorted out free of charge under warranty. Obviously not things like bulbs, pads etc.

I've had problems with my car and took to a garage, they call me up and say this is the problem, its going to need a new X would you like us to order the part and carry on with the work for you?

Not how most main dealers work unfortunately. But they should have been clear on that.

    I smell Chinese Whispers.

They simply cannot KNOW down the phone. They need to look at the car to investigate.
    And investigation takes time...

I suspect they actually said something like "That's odd, you wouldn't normally have both bulbs fail at once, but we'll check. It might be an electronic fault, which would probably be warranty."

Both bulbs, if they are actual bulbs, going at once is not that uncommon.
  • First things first, did you put new bulbs in after they went out, no, why not.

I’m going through a warranty claim with Peugeot at the moment.
First thing I was told, there is a one hour fee for diagnostics £140 I think it was.
No charged if it is a warranty job. Lucky for me it is a warranty job.

First claim a few tears ago, washers would not spray the screen. Took car into Peugeot and was told that blocked washer jets were not covered under warranty.
So had to pay the fee.
I did, but they wanted £500 to fix them, I said fat chance and took it to my local mechanic.
Within 2 minutes he found a split pipe from washer fluid bottle to jets at the bonnet hinge.
Back to the scum bags at Peugeot, showed them the broken part.
Asking which of their highly trained technicians misdiagnosed the repair.
I got it fixed under warranty, my £140 back, plus £80 good will payment.

Never just a dealer, just my opinion.

So just how much was charged?

    Which BMW, age etc?
Which type of lights? As if LED you are looking at 4 figures.

  • Sounds like it was a toss up between wear and tear and a warranty job and they just didn't know until they diagnosed it properly.  Most garages have a warranty member of staff so they will try hard for you.  Ultimately, if it's not under warranty then you're on the hook for it and I would say why damage your relationship with the garage over two bulbs and an hour's worth of work...?  You're back on the road for minimal costs by the sounds of things and you may need them for something bigger in future.

Why Toyota make a refreshing change.

Took our 7 year old Yaris to the dealer, suspected worn wheel bearings, picked up at MOT a few months ago and getting worse.

Said they would check it, no charge and let us know what they found.  3 hours later a call to say new bearings fitted under warranty.
