Hello my car insurance is due. On comparison sites the difference between putting unemployed and retired is about 30% more if unemployed. I haven't given up on finding a part time job, but it is quite unlikely due to personal reasons. Would it be ok to put retired but then change my policy details mid policy in the unlikely event of getting a job. I'm not claiming any benefits.
There was one quote from One Protect insurance that was the same for retired and unemployed but I can find little info on them.
Thanks for any advice

Are you claiming unemployment benefits? If not I don't see an issue with saying that you are retired, assuming you're not 20 years old. If you are claiming state pension then I would suggest this makes your argument stronger.
Circumstances change, people often come out of retirement.1

I asked an insurance broker a similar question previously, they advised if you are taking benefits use Unemployment, if drawing a pension use Retired, otherwise use ‘Independent Means’.
But you really need to confirm with the company you go with. Also be aware of any costs for changing the policy later.
Although when I added commuting to my initial policy it slightly lowered the price even though I won’t be commuting.1

@El_Torro @Snot thanks for the replies. I will go with retired, I've not been claiming benefits and have been living off a pension lump sum. I did not see the ' independent means' until you mentioned it, that brings up different results to retired and unemployed.
When I've decided who to go with I will give them a ring to double check. Thanks very much0

I retired early and my insurer told me that if I was in receipt of any amount of private or state pension, they would accept ‘retired’. otherwise ‘unemployed’.0

I found myself betwixt and between employment "categories" after giving up work.
As under 50 at the time, I plumped for "housewife".
No income in my own right (and won't have until 55). Not looking for work. Not claiming anything. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

It's normally "house person" these days.Sea_Shell said:I found myself betwixt and between employment "categories" after giving up work.

Presumably you are in a long term relationship and living with that person?0
