Renault kadjar 2019 engine failure.

Sadly common in this engine on certain years, used in Nissan , Renault and others. You've a chance of goodwill if you have a spotless dealer service history. Having the thermostat replaced elsewhere can't be used by them - it was the original part that failed - does the garage have the old part? Get it refitted then take to a dealer and play dumb?1

WellKnownSid said:I understand it's not an unknown fault - Dusters with the 1.3 TCE engine have suffered similar. It's the thermostat housing - a complex plastic part - that just cracks. Engine overheats through coolant loss, writing off the head gasket (possibly warping the head and other damage).
Definitely search the Renault / Captur / Kadjar forums for more info in case others have managed good will.
Other options are to find a good (i.e. with warranty) used engine or get it rebuilt. Certainly head gasket but would require a check of the oil system / pump as well as the cooling system / pump as I believe the housing carries both fluids.
Engine was co-developed by Mercedes so used in several Mercs... another search option.
The part that covers the actual thermostat, the domed part on the upper left, suddenly blows apart at the joint with from rest of the housing.
It usually happens when the vehicle is on a long run, like the motorway and it causes an instant loss of coolant.
More often than not that loss of coolant causes major damage to the rest of the engine.
Some have noticed coolant loss before hand (smelt hot coolant) and upon inspection the housing has been found to be leaking, but more often than not, it's a sudden failure out on the road so you don't get a coolant warning until it's gone.
As stated, this engine is used in various brands, internally they are known as,
Renault and Dacia call it the H5Ht.
Mercedes call it the M282.
Nissan call it the HR13DDT.
Customers know them slightly different brand/boot names.
Renault and Dacia customers know it by TCE 130/140/160 depending on power output.
Mercedes the A160/A180/A200 (from 2018)
Nissan call it the DIG-T 1.3i.
The problem seems more prevalent with the 140/160hp models, but I'm sure if that's because they sold more as those particular output engines appear in more models.
The 130hp was used in the Dacia Duster and only appeared in the Mk5 Clio for a short time in EDC (auto) form.
I have a TCE130 and asked my local Renault Tech about it.
He said I should check the coolant level regularly as there is no coolant level warning, just a temp gauge.
I try to see if there is any sign of leaks from the housing as well, but saying that mine only just gets to temp most days. It came with a 5 year warranty as standard, that ending in March and I think I will swap it then.
A lot of vehicles have faults like this, problems that cause major and expensive damage when more often than not, the car is well out of the warranty period and quite often, out of the dealer network for servicing.
You will basically get the same reaction out of all of them, "it's not our problem".
I doubt you'll get any help at this stage from Renault, but it's worth trying.
The engine it's self is pretty common so a decent used engine shouldn't be hard to source at a reasonable price.
Obviously, if it comes with thermostat still attached (they usually do as they just cut the pipes to get the engine out quickly) replace that while it's out.

Using plastic instead of metal on critical components is the new way of introducing obsolescence into vehicles. As long as it last 5 years and a day its job done.0
