Earth in new plug socket.

I have no idea of the regulations nowadays, all my house wiring was done in the days before electricity became dangerous. My suggestion just covered every possibility, to be on the safe side. I'd imagine yours meet the standards for nowadays as it was presumably done by a qualified electrician like Risteard.rickyroma said:
It's a new build. I had a peek inside a couple of other sockets. Just the 1 wire to the front socket plate on them too. Screws earthing the backplate. I assume they are all wired like this in our house. Is it not safe? Or should I get some earth wire and adapt them all?EssexExile said:1 earth wire coming in, connect it to the earth terminal in the box, then run a wire (preferably in green/yellow sleaving) from that terminal to one terminal on the socket then again to the other terminal on the socket.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1 -
it's perfectly safe, it's not a requirement to bond backboxes as long as they have one fixed lug. but for some reason, older electricians that are stuck in their ways still do it, and DIYers who don't know any better all still do it and advocate that it's in some way safer.rickyroma said:

The Wiring Regulations are a minimum requirement. An extra cable to the backbox is still desirable (and in some cases imperative, e.g. with metallic conduit providing the Earth path). In fact in the south of Ireland it is an absolute requirement in all cases, even with a protective conductor included in the cable and fixed lug on the backbox. We would always run a protective conductor to the backbox.2
