Driveway crossover

Options
My house has a council owned grass verge outside the wall boundary. The bit I've highlighted in green I want to block pave along with the rest of the garden, is it permitted if i keep it within the confines of the dropped kerb?

Simple answer very unlikely as that piece of land looks like it is part of the public highway given it is outside of your wall and gates.
  • So would the council have put the existing concrete there? it looks terrible, do I have to apply to the council to get it replaced?

You'll probably find a paved surface under the grass, at least the width of the gates.

You would need to ask the council to replace the surface, but is unlikely to be a high priority for them.  They may agree to do it if you pay for the work.  Probably unlikely they will agree to block paving as it is a maintenance nightmare.

Were you also planning to remove the front boundary wall?

Simple answer is 'No'.  It's not your property and worst case would be you block pave it and the council orders you to reinstate the concrete.

As far as the land you do own, I'd also check what local planning policy is with regards covering your front garden completely with a non permeable surface. You may need planning permission.

So the council will probably want you to pay to widen the crossover.  Which might be the best way to deal with this - ask them to quote for reconstructing the crossover to suit the double driveway... then you'll end up with something which looks nicer and is more useful to you.

Don't be tempted to DIY the work in the highway - councils tend to find out, and make it difficult/expensive for the resident to correct the situation.
