EDF changing direct debit

  • Any outstanding debt on the account? As well as the above replies?

Given 2 bills which do not even add up to £120...
No, i am in credit with them at the moment.
  • Is the bill just for leccy or gas or is a dual fuel bill. If its for dual fuel does it include reading from both your gas and leccy meters

As above, have you got smart metersif so have you checked that your bill actually reflects the meter readings or are they estimates. If you dont have smart meters have you sent in readings and checked that the bills are correctly using the meter reading. Is the bill for a month or a quarter.

Secondly, did you give EDF your annual energy consumption in kwh when you joined them and have you checked that they are using your opening readings, or did you leave it to them to make a random guess (they call it an estimate)

Generally they'll guess what your annual consumption is and then divide it by 12 to get a monthly figure. However its far better if you have your own info and do your own sums. Dont forget that your direct debit isn't the bill its just a payment towards your bills.

Bear in mind that you'll probably use 2-3 times as much energy in the winter months between November and the end of March than you have done in August and September so its quite likely that you could be using around £120 or more a month in the winter but unless you keep track of it and tell them they just keep making random guesses.
I have dual energy. And my smart meter should give them accurate readings. When i switched to them i gave them my annual consumption. I guess I'll give them a call and say that i dont agree as someone suggested.

Do you have gas and electricity?

The standing charges alone are around 95p/day for dual fuel.

    I got both.

Do those bills show estimated or actual readings? Is your meter smart?
I got a smart meter so should be accurate.

Your bill or on line account should show an estimated annual use for each fuel derived from the national database which will determine your DD amount, are they anywhere close to your own estimate of use ?  Giving EDF CS a call will be like banging your head against a wall - in fact do that, it will be less painful :)
  • EDF wanted to reduce my DD but I did persuade them that I wanted to leave it alone all but a £5 knocked off. Yes I am in credit but my NSH's have not been on, unlike the next 5-6 months when I want to be warm and cosy and not have a big hike next Feb/March, especially without the £200 WFA this year.

Yes, it *should* but have you checked to see that it is?

If you're not happy with the DD amount then the other option is to switch to pay on bill so you only pay for what you use each month. Means you will pay a lot more in winter than summer which some people might not like but you know you won't build up credit and are in control of what you pay.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Pay on bill can now mean two things at some suppliers

Monthly variable direct debit - that currently most suppliers offer at direct debit rates

And standard credit pay on receipt of bill (traditionally 6m or 3m postal)  - at higher standard credit rates  (now capped at £112 more than DD)
