Bath panel help. [Pic attached ]

We've bought new MDF bath panels to replace the acrylic one. We have just taken the acrylic sides off and their are pieces of wood on the underside of the rim where the metal grip slid under the acrylic rim.
Can the blocks be removed without damaging the bath, as there is only a few millimetres for the new panel to lock up to.
I have attached these pics to show what I mean. I removed the thin plate and screws.
