I moved to the UK in 2014. I kept on applying for national insurance number from 2014 but was told that I must to be actively looking for job to get that. I was taking care of a young child and hence wasn't looking for a job. I finally got national insurance number in 2020 and have been getting child benefit and national insurance credits since then.
Is there a way for me to get backdated national insurance credits from 2014 to 2020? They say that they can backdate for 3 months maximum.
If national insurance number helpline had provided me with national insurance number, I wouldn't have missed credits for this period. Just to clarify, I am looking for national insurance credits and not money related to child benefit during that period.
Could you please share your thoughts on my situation? Thank you

I would say it would only run from the time the National Insurance number was issued to you. I don't think you could even voluntarily pay for missing years without a national insurance number or if employed under a businesses national insurance number get those years added.0

If you weren’t entitled to get a NI number then the helpline couldn’t give you one.
https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-numberYou can apply for a National Insurance number if you:
- live in the UK
 - have the right to work in the UK
 - are working, looking for work or have an offer to start work
