Amazon and ID for a refund

I made a small purchase (less than £30) to be delivered to an Amazon locker earlier this month, it ceased tracking after reaching the depot and Amazon declared it as lost. I too have had this battle over requests for ID for them to issue a refund. It's an unacceptable and unreasonable request, which I will not oblige.
I have already had a [chargeback] refund from my card provider, however I'm so incensed by the issue I'm seeking legal advice and will be pursuing it until it's formally resolved.
Amazon are in breach of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and have no right to withhold refund for their breach of contract.4 -

@the_lunatic_is_in_my_head - is this something you're familiar with?0 -
I had this same issue today and have submitted a complaint, which I intend to forward to the ICO - don't expect any kind of substantive reply, but I don't need one. I just need to be able to take this to the ICO. Amazon appear to be collecting unnecessary data or are not transparent in why they need the data. Typically if you are buying age restricted items you are made aware, at the point of purchase, that an age check will be carried out requiring ID and have the choice whether to continue with your purchase. If ID check isn't required at the point of sale, why would it be required when requesting a refund, as a refund is just reversing the bank transaction that you carried out without needing ID.It seems like bullying tactics to deprive people of a legitimate refund.1

Hi, I am having exactly the same issue with Amazon now. They are refusing to refund me for a faulty product (which they previously told me they have issued the refund and Ill receive it in 5 days), and now they are sending me emails asking me to upload a government ID.
I do not feel comfortable uploading my ID to an online shopping platform and really don't understand the necessity. It feels to me like Amazon as just leveraging their power to withhold money in order to collect more data on people.
Has anyone else contested this with Amazon and been successful?
Thanks...0 -
Don't send ID over as it is possible they'll collect data and request for further documentation. I.e: Proof of Address.
File a chargeback. Only option.

I had this Issue after one of their Drivers put my Parcel in a Communal Bin, Clever move. I sent Photo's. Then they demanded ID, I told I have No Driving License as I have Seizures and No Passport and have no need for one. They then said I need a residency Card (any clue?) We don't have one. I got my Refund. I then ordered Bird Seed, it was a last resort as couldn't get any locally. They sent a Fake Brand and used. They refused to refund again asking for ID. This time they accused me of Fraud and a long story short, I reported them to the Company they claim the seed was from, (They don't sell on Amazon and either deal direct or with select Companies that have to have high standards, I pointed out the Sales of Good act and distant selling regulations, under 14 days etc, they then made an error. The reason they want the ID is to black list me and take me to court. Erm its a £10.99 bag of seed and its used, I still have it stored for evidence. Whilst on the Phone I called my Bank with my Partners phone and asked about the Charge back. They asked if it stated I would need ID to return, It does not, The lady at the bank put my call on hold whilst she check the listing. Suddenly I got an email with my refund. All future purchases will only be refunded with ID. But I can still shop at Amazon.
That was last November. (2024). I have not shopped or used Amazon since. However, they do keep emailing me about the benefits of Prime. I replied to one saying I would need their ID to use their Services, I got 3 blank emails back. So this is what Amazon is doing when they ask for ID, they don't like you fighting back and needless to say the case is on going and I now shop elsewhere, its cheaper and only had to return one item, they was apologetic and I got a free gift. Don't give in, remember if you need to have ID to get a refund, then it must say at the time of Purchase otherwise its miss selling. Life is a lot less hassle without Amazon and my products are a higher quality, but slightly slower on delivery. A price I am happy to pay.0 -

Sales of Goods act hasn't applied to consumers for many many years now since it was superseded (boom boom), along with the DSR's.1
