Driving licence renewal with passport

Hi.
My driving  licence is due for renewal in December 2024.
My passport expiry date is February 2025. Issue date 10 years last September.
Am I right in assuming my passport is valid  to renew my driving licence ?
In other words, unlike travel, it's the expiry date that's the important one?
Many thanks.

  • from the gov.uk website

    You’ll need:

    • your UK passport (either current or expired within the past 12 months) or the document you used to set up your online immigration status
    • your current driving licence (if you have it)
    • your National Insurance number (if you know it)
    • addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years

    Thanks Mr Stripey.
I just wanted to confirm that it's the expiry date (Feb 2025) on the passport that is relevant and not the issue date (Sept 2014).
My passport is now invalid for travel due to the issue date but I just wanted to know if DVLA use the expiry date. I assume they do . I didn't know an expired passport within 12 months was valid. I had read that the passport had to be valid so assumed that meant within the expiry date.
Government website says "you cannot use a passport number that has expired".
I'll try it anyway. If the worst comes to the worst  I'll go to the Post Office.
    Thanks.

yeah, i guess it doesn't explicitly say that but even taking ten years from Sept 2014 then it's "expiry" would seem to fit with the "either current or expired in the past 12 months" criteria.

That's not strictly true, you can travel to the US, for example, and stay there until your passport expires

    Thanks DD.
I was only generalising about the travel with regard to the issue date, which is irrelevant if the DVLA are looking at the expiry date.

No problem, it's just that I've seen a lot of misinformation about passport validity. It's only when entering a Schengen zone country (in Europe) that you need to have a passport that was issued within the last ten years.

Your passport is still valid until its expiry date, so for DVLA purposes "within 12 months of expiry" would take you to February 2026

I went through the whole procedure twice a year ago and the online system spat the dummy, didn't like my documentation.  In the end I did it at the Post office (bigger ones only) and was very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was and the PO guy filled on all the forms took the photo and I had it within three days.

Try online but if it rejects it don't waste time trying again as you will spend a heap of time trying to figure out if you went wrong somewhere.
