Bus stop

There's a bus stop 4 doors away from my property which I wasn't particularly bothered about when I bought it, in fact I liked that it was easily accessible as I don't drive anymore. It's a small street and terraced houses which open straight onto the pavement, what I didn't realise was how many buses stop here per day (96 stops from 5.45am/10.45pm), when a bus stops the rear end of the bus is directly outside of my bedroom (ground floor flat), so you can imagine I get all emissions, engine noise, etc, it actually vibrates my window and bellows through my flat, my window and door is constantly covered in black soot and I'm having to sleep in my lounge. I looked into the stop, it's 6ft from buildings to stop there's no room for pedestrians to pass if passengers are waiting, no security barriers and on a busy road, has no room to have seats or covered shelter and the next stop is les than 30 yards away which is not in front of houses has a shelter and barriers, safer to cross the road, easily accessible, I requested nexus to look into the situation and they came back with total rubbish. So I'm  leaning onto the safety side to esculate, any advice please

    Good luck with that

Absolutely they will not spend money to relocate a bus stop to accommodate you

  • Apparently the stop has been here for 30 years it's not fit for purpose now, there's no room to upgrade it or make it safe and another more modernised safer stop less than 30 yards away I don't see how they can refuse

If it's 6' that should be 1828mm which doesn't meet the preferred standard of 2000mm but well over the generally accepted, though not legally defined, absolute minimum of 1000mm. At 1828mm there should be enough room for pedestrians to pass a single line of queuing people, should even be enough for a wheelchair to pass.

You bought the house knowing the bus stop was there, they aren't going to pay to move it.

Have you looked into ways of reducing the impact like triple glazed windows, self cleaning windows etc?

We have a bus stop a similar sort of distance from us too but our buses here are electric so no fumes or engine noise. There is a raise manhole cover which makes a big thump when they hit it but walls/insulation block the sound out from inside the flat
  • I never complained about the bus stop, it isn't outside of my home the stop is approximately 35/37ft up, however when a bus stops the rear where the engine is sits directly outside of my bedroom window, like 6 ft away I live on the ground floor apartment, I'd rather have a bus stop outside my window than the bus engine. I can't open my window due to the fumes, 96 stops per day and 5 different services in a road that is approximately 120/140 ft long is one way, 2 lanes the bus stop takes up most of one lane, traffic coming onto this from 3 ways, a new set of apartments right in the centre of street with a car park in the middle which is directly opposite the bus stop and our homes, a pub on one corner with a a car part and another small car park at the other end, all within a space of 120/140 feet with absolutely zero traffic control not even a crossing   You just have to run and hope for the best

As said earlier, you bought the house knowing the bus stop was there.

Your choice. you either live with it or move.
  • There wouldn't be a "Request to move a bus stop" option available if one can't be moved, therefore there has to be a way where a request can't be refused, and I would love to see the H & S assessment  on this bus stop

I guess the switch to electric busses is somthing you look forward too - light at the end of the tunnel.
