Car written off prior to renewal Date

I was unfortunately involved in a RTC 2 days prior to my renewal date of 20th October (already paid in full 3 weeks prior). The accident was not my fault and the car was written off and payment settled. I had protected NCB and the excess was not deducted.
The following day the insurer emailed to say I needed to pay an additional £46.00 for the cover for the new year. I have queried this as the car does not exist and did not exist at the renewal date.
Tesco have now said they are unable to quote for my new car until I pay the outstanding or give me an indication if I will be refunded anything for year I have paid up front.
How can this be right that I have to pay for a insurance on a car that does not exist.
I feel they are holding me to ransom over this

If you had an RTA 2 days before renewal the car still existed. May have been undrivable or such depending on the extent of the damage but also could be an old car with minor wing damage thats still perfectly drivable.
The fact you know its going to be a total loss within 2 days of an accident points to it being an older car that doesn't need inspection to know its beyond economical repair. Almost certainly it won't have actually been written off within the 2 days as they'll need your V5c etc to complete that process.
Why did you let the policy renew if you thought your car no longer existed?
The £46 will be the annual impact of the non-fault claim on your renewal. In practice you will only be using a week or so of it on your old car and the rest will be a credit towards your new car's insurance or inc in the pro-rata refund if you decide to insure your new car elsewhere0 -
Was the date the car was written off after your renewal date?
In that case your insurance would still be required until that date.0 -
Yes it would have been the day after as the first working day was Monday and renewal date was Sunday.0
